Welcome to the Brookdale Hospital Clinical Ultrasound Fellowship! We currently have an ultrasound division consisting of six emergency medicine ultrasound fellowship trained physicians and pride ourselves on strong ultrasound fundamentals as an aspect of care offered in our department. Matthew Kessel, DO, FAEMUS - Director of Ultrasound Division and Fellowship

  • Ultrasound Fellowship Training: NYP-Brooklyn Methodist Hospital

  • Founded EUFAC-accredited EUS Fellowship at Brookdale in 2021

  • Epic EMR Physician Builder; modernized and streamlined our innovative ultrasound workflow

  • Instituted the emergency department resuscitative TEE program in 2025

  • Areas of Interest: advanced echo/TEE, pelvic ultrasound, nerve blocks, ultrasound physics, gamification, and workflow efficiency

Aluko Gift, MD - Medical Director

  • Restructured and simplified our high-level disinfection workflow for endocavitary transducers in the ED

Curriculum

Equipment

Our curriculum is geared toward the academic foundations necessary to ace the ABEM FPD exam and gain a proficiency regarding the principles required to run an ultrasound division.

Unique Educational Opportunities:

  • Gain experience in performing resuscitative transesophageal echo.

  • Learn the intricacies behind the various aspects of building an ultrasound workflow.

  • Become proficient in advanced modalities including nerve blocks, endocavitary ultrasound, advanced echo, and more.
